March Madness

This is my first blog post in a while, mainly due to me being as busy as a mad march hare
I had an idea about 12 months ago which was postponed, edited and finally transformed into a project that I was sure would help others and thus in March if finally came into being.
The result of my March madness was less than impressive at first glance
As my mentor Sterling Valentine says repeatedly, there are only 2 ways to keep score in this business, sales and subscriptions, everything else is just pre-cursors to one of these.

When you have done all the setting up in your new autoresponder and the forms are ready to be used for your new subscribers, it makes sense to bring across all those that you spent so much time gathering in your old autoresponder. This is thankfully a relatively simple task which most of the major services make even simpler through push button menu driven processes.
However the question that you should consider at this point is this.
Do you really want to import all of those people that are nothing more than numbers on a spread sheet and have never engaged or even opened any of your email compositions in a very long time if ever.
I would recommend you take this opportunity to do some spring cleaning of your list and use their lack of attention to your benefit.

Having just left GetResponse to return to Aweber, it came as a shock to realise that they did not have their own dedicated survey feature but then in hindsight this actually makes sense and serves as an important marketing lesson to us all. Every business must have a specialism and most businesses fail when they reach too far outside their specialist area.
Aweber is an autoresponder and its specialism is getting your messages to their destination whilst reporting back on how well your email marketing is performing.
There are many suppliers of survey software and whilst the GetResponse survey feature works very well, there is a lot to be said for using a dedicated service, which is what Aweber have chosen to do and I for one have no gripes or concerns about their decision as they are working with specialists in this area.
Of course this means that all those survey you created in GetResponse will have to be either abandoned or re-created in a survey partner of Aweber.
This may sound like a roadblock to your return to Aweber but trust me it is not that difficult or time consuming to reproduce your survey for use by your Aweber subscribers.
So the question of course is dear subscriber, how was it for you?

If you follow the advice from many followers of fashion they will tell you that creating rich html emails is the way forward for the new video and image focussed Internet however when you actually listen to them in their dedicated forums they reveal the other sorry side to the story. Depending which part of the world you are form will of course adjust your attitude and the advice you receive from your government about staying safe online but using rich html emails will definitely reduce your open rate wherever you are..
In the UK the general consensus is that html rich emails are a bad thing as they could contain all sort of hidden code designed to do you and your computer harm which is why by default most email software does not automatically download the html content. In fact if the email is too heavy on the code then it is likely that this message will be sent direct to your junk folder without you ever seeing it. Those that promote the use of html heavy email have devised many techniques to overcome these issues but really why make your marketing hard from the outset.
The other issue I have with html templates is that they are a pain to write as you spend far too much time on the formatting which leaves less time for the adding of valuable subscriber content.
Coming Home to Aweber

I left Aweber in 2011 primarily because I had a TrafficWave account that was generating a steady income for me and I wanted to ramp that income upwards however when it came time to ramping up my marketing that autoresponder was found to be lacking. Over the next few months I tried many autoresponders but all of these were either lacking in features or had development issues that meant it was not a good service at that time.
Eventually I settled upon GetResponse and I thought I had found the end of my autoresponder wandering, after all it even used the same form generator software as Aweber.
However there was something niggling me about their service and it was not until I returned to update the Facebook page I had abandoned some time ago that one of niggles became apparent, they did offer a solution but it was less than perfect and smelled more of fudge than a good marketing practice, yes I love html code but not that much.
