Business Planning for the Incompetent, me!
Posted by: | Comments
As long as you get there eventually then you are a winner, of course many will have given up long before they reach this point.
Alex Jeffreys is a big proponent of the saying “fail to plan, plan to fail”, which deep down I know is right but having tried his method and many others to plan my tasks, they all irritated and hindered rather than helped.
The problem of course is finding a system that feels natural to you, when it feels right then you are more likely to stick with it.
The first task is to breakdown your life into projects and tasks, for this I looked at many software options and after many trial accounts, I have decided to use Mindmanager by Mindjet, this actually solves 2 issues I have been having.
Firstly, I love Xmind but they will not commit to resolving the focus issue, where all maps open at 100%, a minor irritation perhaps but when you are working with over 30 maps it soon becomes a major time and focus issue. Thankfully Mindmanager solves this issue but for over $200 it was not that much of an issue!
Secondly, Mindmanager has an inbuilt project scheduler, thus I no longer need to make another investment in software to do this.
4 Points of the Compass

By now if you have been reading this blog from some time, you will be aware of the need to plan for success.
I have mentioned that I have followed several mentors at the same time which is never a good idea unless you choose these people carefully. Rich Schefren is fantastic for clarifying your business and its purpose, Sterling Valentine is great for getting you to focus on the marketing that matters which of course is the attraction of new leads.
There are of course plenty of other mentors out there and they all provide good information if you want what they have obtained.
This is where your plan for success comes into play
We discussed the idea of visualising your perfect day, this came via Frank Kern and it is a very powerful method of clarifying what you really want regardless of the income goals.
The Opportunity Within

As an aircraft engineer who has to go through human factors training every 2 years, I am constantly reminded of the dangers from focussing too closely on a task or problem. Human factors is important in any safety crucial industry and of course when you are at 30, 000ft you want to be confident that all the nuts, bolts and wires are in the right place!
However in any task no matter how important or mundane, the simplest of distractions from boss asking you when it will be ready to your partner tutting as you just post an update before you leave for dinner, can mean you lose your place, forget what comes next and ultimately either have to start again or miss the next step.
You may already be aware of the issue that this causes, if not then watch this video.
Obsessive Marketing Passion Leads to Success

I knew my OCD would come in handy eventually.
One lesson I learned about time management ages ago was that you cannot implement any sort of strategy until you know yourself and how efficient or otherwise you are. This is why I now track everything I do, from blogging to sleeping, everything is tracked via an Android application called Time Recording Pro.
As I said if this sounds a little bit obsessive then if you have been following me on Facebook for any length of time, you will know that I have had to instigate an eat alarm as this is something that I all too often forget to do whilst I am in my zone and following my passions when it comes to marketing! This is a benefit of reducing your diets carbohydrate content, by reducing the severity of the sugar rush whilst you eat, you reduce blood sugar based hunger pangs. Of course when I do eventually eat, my stomach is like an angry women on the porch greeting her drunken spouse home.

But what of the speed, did that improve?
I was unable to measure the difference in load time fairly due to there being far too many factors that influence this. I do not have a private and dedicated Internet connection in my town for just my use thus other residents in this house street and across the world will all play a factor in that timing. But what of the Plugin how does it look?
